Baby's skin at birth: a microbiome in the making
At birth, an infant discovers an entirely new environment. Their skin, previously protected in a low-microorganism environment, is suddenly exposed to a multitude of factors: microbes, air, textiles, humidity, and friction.
From birth, this microbiome forms in the child and continues to develop throughout their life. Understanding the importance and functioning of a baby's microbiome is essential for maintaining healthy skin and preventing irritation.
An immature skin barrier
During the first few months of life, the skin undergoes rapid changes.
- The epidermis is thinner and more fragile.
- The barrier function is less effective.
- The pH varies between 6.5 and 7.5 at birth, then gradually acidifies.
- Sebum production is transiently high, then rapidly decreases.
This immaturity makes infant skin more sensitive to external aggressions (friction, dryness, irritants).

The Skin Microbiome: An Ecosystem Under Construction
From the first hours of life, a baby's skin is colonized by microorganisms (non-pathogenic bacteria, yeasts, viruses).
This microbiome is initially not very diverse, then evolves rapidly under the influence of many factors:
- Mode of delivery
- Skin-to-skin contact
- Family environment
- Diet
- Applied care
The microbiome plays several essential roles:
- Participation in the maturation of the skin's immune system.
- Barrier effect against pathogenic microorganisms.
- Contribution to the inflammatory balance of the skin.
A balanced microbiome in early childhood is associated with better skin health and reduces the risk of certain conditions such as atopic dermatitis.

Simple actions to preserve this balance
Infant skin requires a short, gentle, and adapted routine.
To prioritize
- Short baths (5 to 10 minutes) at moderate temperature (35–37°C).
- A mild, fragrance-free cleanser that respects skin pH.
- Pat dry, without rubbing.
- Clothing made from natural, breathable fibers.
- Appropriate hydration for dry skin.
To Limit
- Fragrance or irritating products
- Excessive cleansing
- Overly frequent or prolonged baths
- Unnecessary antibacterial products
- Occlusive or irritating fabrics
A minimalist routine is generally the most suitable for respecting the skin's physiology.
